PistolStar Emerging as the Leading Innovator of Password Management

Since launching in 1999, PistolStar, Inc. has evolved from a consulting firm to a leading innovator of password management solutions that meet the challenges of securing the global enterprise. PistolStar narrowed their focus on password management and security by carefully listening to the needs of their customers. "PistolStar's number one goal is to respond to customer needs and requests by delivering capabilities that will facilitate smoother and faster logons, maintain password and system security, and positively impact the organization's bottom line," states PistolStar president, Thomas Hoey.

"As companies provide employees, vendors, and customers around the world with access to enterprise-wide business applications, end-users are accumulating several usernames and passwords to gain access to these systems," said Roberta J. Witty, research director, Security & Privacy, Gartner, Inc. "To address the issues arising from the abundance of end-user credentials, companies need a solution that will simplify and secure the password management process for end-users, thereby freeing up the time and resources used by IT to respond to password-related calls."

PistolStar’s product, Password Power, was developed and introduced in 2001 to create simple, efficient solutions to customers’ complex network security problems. Since its introduction, Password Power has continually been upgraded to reflect the ever changing business environments.

“Businesses evolve, and thus need to deploy new software applications and platforms all the time, especially in these days of mergers and consolidations. One of our principal goals is to make things simpler and easier for our customers, so we wanted to make sure that Password Power could easily adapt to their changing networks," said PistolStar president and CEO Tom Hoey.

Password Power is a single sign-on solution that removes the need for separate passwords for Lotus Notes (including the Notes ID file), iNotes, Domino Internet applications, Sametime Connect, and Windows operating systems. Using their password for Microsoft Active Directory, SunONE LDAP, or Novell eDirectory, end-users logon only once and access all applications on Domino servers in multiple domains. Password policy management is no longer needed, as Password Power automatically transfers Windows password policy rules to other passwords and simplifies the coordination of disparate password policies.

The newly released Password Power 8 is built on an updated framework that makes it easier to add product upgrades and new application passwords. Version 8 also adds support for the IBM iSeries (AS400), SAP, Citrix thin client and Oracle. The design of the new product framework allows a customer to add new passwords by installing the appropriate PistolStar plug-in module.

PistolStar Password Power integrates with LDAP directories such as Microsoft Active Directory, Sun ONE, Domino, and Novell eDirectory, as well as IBM Lotus technology. As a result of the company’s unique experience in the Lotus Notes/Domino space, Password Power is the leading password management solution for Lotus Notes installations.

To bring PistolStar's focused software solutions to customers, founder Tom Hoey and the PistolStar senior development team utilize in-depth knowledge gained through extensive experience as developers at Iris Associates and Lotus Development Corporation. Hoey is responsible for developing core features available in Lotus Notes and Domino R5.

Systems Requirements
Password Power is a client-side solution with an optional server component that integrates seamlessly and does not require end-user interaction to install. Password Power's server-side capabilities support Windows, Linux, Solaris, and IBM AIX 5.1. On the client side, Password Power supports Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, and XP.
